The car ride home was silent.
When the Richardses dropped Mike and his dad off in the driveway, Hazel took Mikeâs injured hand in hers and quietly said, âItâs going to be OK.â
He wished he could believe her.
Instead, he walked into the house ahead of his dad, ran up to his room, and slammed the door closed. The entry form for the King Crag Ultimate Indoor Competition was still hidden in his desk. He hadnât turned it in yet. And now, he wouldnât need to.
Mike snatched the form up with his good hand, crumpled it up, and threw it in the wastebasket next to the desk.
